Northview Bank Lends in Itasca County
Itasca County marks the beginning of the Iron Range, and is a fantastic year-round playground with over 1,000 lakes to choose from. The cities of Grand Rapids, Marcell (also known as “the edge of the wilderness” due to its proximity to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness), Bigfork, and Deer River are all great communities in the area. If wilderness is what you seek, you’ll find it in Itasca County with the 1.8 million acre Chippewa National Forest nearby. The Chippewa is home to the greatest concentration of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 and offers vast tracts of rough and hilly woodlands with many lakes, ponds, and bogs, making it perfect for camping, hunting, birdwatching, hiking, or fishing.
If you visited one lake per week during the open water fishing season in Itasca County it would take you nearly 40 years to fish them all! Here are a few of the most famous lakes in the area. Lake Winnibigoshish is a legendary body of water. “Big Winnie” gets its name from its size—56,000 acres. Of the 140 miles of shoreline, 95 percent is undeveloped, so it’s perfect for a pristine fishing getaway. Its water is clear and cool and the fishing and boating opportunities are unparalleled.
Bowstring Lake is a 10,000 acre body of water that is relatively shallow, reaching only 32 feet deep. But it is a scenic, open lake with good fishing, offering that quintessential “up north experience.”
Deer Lake is 4,100 acres of fun with a maximum depth of over 120 feet and exceptional clarity at 13 feet. Its numerous islands, bays, and inlets give it plenty of fish structure, making it a great lake for muskie, smallmouth bass, and walleye. Cabins dot its shorelines—could one of them soon be yours?
Sand Lake, at 3,400 acres, offers protected bays and windswept flats, perfect for a variety of conditions. The fall colors on Sand Lake are amazing, and the fishing action is hot most of the year with excellent crappie, walleye, bluegill, and pike populations.
